Utah Athletes Shine at 2017 Simplot Games Preliminaries
Pocatello, Idaho – After a day and a half of exciting preliminaries, Utah athletes were the top qualifiers in seven separate events at Simplot Games. In a show of the state’s distance depth, the Beehive state placed 22 of 36 qualifiers in the boys’ 1600 meters. Here are some highlights: Grace Ping, an eighth grader from Park City, qualified for finals with the top time of 10:51.04 in the girls’ 3200 meters. Ping will race on Saturday at 3:25 p.m. Casey Clinger, a senior from American Fork, secured the top qualifying spot in the boys’ 3200 meters with a time of 9:22.69. He will compete in the finals on Saturday at 3:40 p.m. in an attempt to break the Simplot Games record.

In the girls’ 4×400-meter relay, Team Provo A had the top qualifying time of 4:03.78, pushing them on to finals. They will compete at 3:55 p.m. Utah boys dominated the qualifying spots in the boys’ 1600 meters, securing 22 of the 36. Haden Penrod, a senior from Springville, finished in the first place spot with a time of 4:23.10. Hunter Woodhall, a senior from West Point, secured the top qualifying spot in the boys’ 400-meter dash with a time of 50.49. He will compete in the same event at 2:21 p.m. and the boys’ 4×400-meter relay at 4:10 p.m. on Saturday. Woodhall took silver in the 200 and bronze in the 400 in the T43 classification at the Paralympics Games in Rio this summer. With a time of 6.29, Dallin Draper, a junior from Lehi, finished first among the qualifiers in the boys’ 60-meter dash. Draper will compete in the same event on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. In the girls’ 800-meter run, Kate Hunter, a senior from Provo, took the top qualifying spot with a time of 2:17.83. She will compete at 2:28 p.m. on Saturday. All events on Saturday are finals. A list of all Utah athletes who qualified is included below. More than 2,200 athletes came from across the U.S., Canada, and Australia to participate in the 39th annual Simplot Games. Simplot Games remains the nation’s premier high school indoor track and field event. Sponsored by the J.R.
