Utah athletes qualify for Saturday finals at 2015 Simplot Games
Pocatello, Idaho – Athletes from Utah took the most qualifying spots of any state in an exhilarating day-and-a-half of preliminary competition at the 2015 Simplot Games.
Some of the most exciting results include:
- Twenty-one of the 36 qualifiers for the girls’ 1600 meters are from Utah, including Lucy Biles, a senior from Herriman. She had the second fastest time of 5:08.49.
- Utah girls took seven of the 14 qualifying spots in the girls’ 3200 meters, including Alyssa Snyder, a senior from Coalville who finished third with a time of 11:14.92.
- Chad Artist, a senior from North Logan, qualified for the boys’ 60-meter dash with the third fastest time of 6.96 seconds.
- The top three qualifiers in the boys 800 meters are all from Utah: Logan MacKay, a junior from Kaysville, Bo Farrer, a senior from Orem, and Chris Schraegle, a senior from Salt Lake City.
- The boys’ 3200 meters also saw a lot of strong finishes from Utah athletes, with eight of the 14 qualifying spots going to Utah. Casey Clinger, a sophomore from American Fork led the Utah pack with a third place finish time of 9:36.53.
- With 36 qualifying spots available in the boys’ 1600 meters, Utah stole the show, by earning 19 of those spots. The second and third place finishes went to Josh Collins, a senior from Heber City, and McKay Johns, a sophomore from American Fork, respectively.
- In the girls’ 4×400-meter relay, Utah teams took spots three, four, five, and 11, as follows: Davis Track Club ‘A’ from Kaysville, Knights Track ‘A’ from Layton, Davis Track Club ‘B’ from Kaysville, and Timpanogos ‘A’ from Orem.
- Two Utah boys’ 1600-meter sprint medley teams qualified with top times: Wildcat Track Club ‘A’ from Woods Cross qualified first in 3:39.82, and Davis Track Club ‘A’ from Kaysville qualified third in 3:42.15.
All events on Saturday are finals, with championship heats beginning at 12:15 p.m. at Holt Arena. A full list of Utah athletes who qualified is listed below.
More than 2,000 athletes have come from across the U.S., Canada, Mexico and Australia to participate in the 37th annual Simplot Games. Simplot Games remains the nation’s premier high school indoor track and field event. Sponsored by the J.R. Simplot Company since 1979, the Simplot Games are held at Idaho State University’s Holt Arena in Pocatello, Idaho.
