Idaho jumper looks for another personal best and second Simplot Games title
Pocatello, Idaho—
Ty Wright, a senior from Shelley, Idaho, returns to Simplot Games after representing his home state at last year’s event by winning the men’s high jump with a personal best mark of 6’9”.
Since the 2018 meet, Wright has improved his PR to 6’9.75”. However, reaching a new height at Simplot Games isn’t the main focus for Wright this time around.
“Last year, I put a lot of expectations on myself and I believe it hindered my performance,” said Wright. “This year, the only thing I expect from Simplot Games is to compete with some amazing jumpers and have a ton of fun.”
Wright competes in both indoor and outdoor track and field at Shelley High School. His events include the 110-meter hurdles, long jump, and the occasional relay, but high jump is Wright’s main event. At Simplot Games, he will only compete in the high jump.
The ability to compete at Simplot Games has always been a special experience for Wright. Ever since his first time at the nation’s premier track and field event as a freshman, Wright has performed his best and achieved a personal record each year.
“Between the unique jumping surface of the turf and the amazing crowd filled with my friends, family, teammates, and people I have competed against since day one, it really is a special place to compete,” Wright said.
Leading up to Simplot Games, Wright has a specific routine that he follows in order to prepare his mind and body for the meet. During meet week, he sweats in a sauna at a temperature of 135 degrees Fahrenheit for 45 minutes each day in order to shed extra weight.
His mental preparation includes meditation and visualization, making sure he has everything he needs before the big event. The night before Simplot Games, Wright drinks 64 ounces of water to ensure he is hydrated for the long day ahead.
Over 2,200 athletes from across the world travel to Pocatello, Idaho to showcase their athletic talents at this event. Though worldwide competitors may be daunting, Wright’s philosophy is to concentrate on his performance and how he is feeling.
In Wright’s mind, the biggest competitor has always been the one staring back at him in the mirror. Surrounded by amazing, athletic jumpers boosts the atmosphere and adrenaline for the Idaho native.
More than 2,200 athletes will come from across the U.S., Canada, Australia and New Zealand to participate in the 41stannual Simplot Games. Simplot Games remains the nation’s premier high school indoor track and field event. Sponsored by the J.R. Simplot Company since 1979, the Simplot Games are held at Idaho State University’s Holt Arena in Pocatello, Idaho.
