Pocatello, Idaho – Hunter Woodhall, a senior from Syracuse Utah, climbed to the top of the podium after a grueling 400-meter final at 2017Simplot Games.
“That wasn’t a race, it was a fight,” Woodhall said with a smile on his face.
Early in the second lap the athletes were all in close quarters and there was some contact. Woodhall crossed the finish line second with a time of 49.07, but due to fouls in the aggressive race, he was awarded the top spot on the podium.
“All you can do in a race like that is learn to react and adapt,” Woodhall said.
Woodhall is the first Paralympic athlete to win at the Simplot Games. He inspired the crowd with his personality.
“Never give up; you can do anything you want if you have the drive for it,” he said.
Woodhall was also the anchor for the Syracuse Track club, who won 4×400 boys’ relay.
“It was a definite confidence booster for the team and I to come out and do so well.”
Woodhall wants to continue his track career after graduating with hopes of attending UNC or BYU. This was his first year attending the Simplot Games, and he left his mark.
“The track was a little weird for me, but the Simplot Games are a great place to be.”
More than 2,200 athletes came from across the U.S., Canada, and Australia to participate in the 39th annual Simplot Games. Simplot Games remains the nation’s premier high school indoor track and field event. Sponsored by the J.R. Simplot Company since 1979, the Simplot Games are held at Idaho State University’s Holt Arena in Pocatello, Idaho.
