Trey Knight Takes First in Weight Throw at 2018 Simplot Games
Pocatello, Idaho—In his Simplot Games debut, Trey Knight, a sophomore from Ridgefield, Wash., took first in boys weight throw with a mark of 80’05.5” at the 2018 Simplot Games.
“I felt pretty good coming in,” said Knight. “This is a really big meet so I was also a little nervous.”
Just before his throw, spectators quieted and a slow clap rippled from the other throwers up to the stands. When the mark was announced, a cheer erupted from the crowd.
Knight’s monumental performance at the Games comes during a successful season. He has thrown 83’ twice this season, which broke the national sophomore-class record, and has maintained an average of 80’.
“I didn’t know what to expect,” said Knight, “but I’m pretty happy with how I did.”
Knight hopes to return to Simplot Games next year to beat his record.
More than 2,200 athletes will come from across the U.S., Canada, Australia, and New Zealand to participate in the 40th annual Simplot Games. Simplot Games remains the nation’s premier high school indoor track and field event. Sponsored by the J.R. Simplot Company since 1979, the Simplot Games are held at Idaho State University’s Holt Arena in Pocatello, Idaho.
