Pocatello, Idaho – Kate Hunter, a senior from Provo, Utah, fought to claim first in the girls’ 800 meters at 2017 Simplot Games.
Heading into the race, Hunter worried about the speed of her competitors, but she was able to get the lead. Mid-race, Hunter got boxed in by competing runners. She paced herself and used her consistent speed to outlast the competition and get out of the pack.
“I knew I had to take the lead early,” said Hunter. “I decided to get in the lead and push the pace and it ended up how I wanted it to.”
Hunter has competed at the Simplot Games one time before, but loves to race at the Games because of the experience.
“The Simplot Games are so fun,” said Hunter. “Everyone is having a good time so it’s good to be here.”
More than 2,200 athletes came from across the U.S., Canada, and Australia to participate in the 39th annual Simplot Games. Simplot Games remains the nation’s premier high school indoor track and field event. Sponsored by the J.R. Simplot Company since 1979, the Simplot Games are held at Idaho State University’s Holt Arena in Pocatello, Idaho.
