High School Athletes to Compete at 37th Annual Simplot Games
Pocatello, Idaho – The 37th annual Simplot Games will be held February 19–21, 2015, at Idaho State University’s Holt Arena. More than 2,000 high school athletes from the U.S., Canada, Mexico, and Australia will compete in track and field events over the three-day competition.
Each year the Games host several Olympians—and the 2015 Games are no exception. Returning to the Games this year are Olympians Dick Fosbury, the Simplot Games Honorary Chairman, Stacy Dragila, Andre Philips, and Willie Banks.
In addition to the competition at Holt Arena, a variety of other events and activities are planned. Breakfast with Fosbury and Friends, a Simplot Games tradition, will be held at the Red Lion Hotel on Friday, February 20, at 7:30 a.m. Two-time Olympic silver medalist and long jump world record holder Mike Powell will be the featured speaker. Powell set the record at 29’ 4.5” in 1991, breaking both Carl Lewis’ 65-meet winning streak and Bob Beamon’s legendary record set in 1968.
Powell will also be the special feature athlete at In the Spotlight, one of three activities at the After Dark Party on Friday, February 20, from 6-9:30 p.m., in the Pond Student Union Building at Idaho State University (ISU). Following dinner, attendees will have a choice of three activities from 6:30-7:30 p.m.: In the Spotlight with Mike Powell; Track Academy with ISU Track and Field Head Coach Dave Nielsen; and Deal or No Deal. The event will conclude with a dance party starting at 7:30 p.m. in the ballroom. Athletes, coaches, and parents are all invited to attend this event. Tickets for the After Dark Party are available in advance at www.simplotgames.com.
The 2014 Simplot Games introduced the 400-meter invitational race, featuring the fastest athletes from around the country. The invitational will continue this year, with athletes again racing with the goal of setting the U.S. standard in the 400 meters.
The Parade of Athletes will take place at 11:25 a.m. on Saturday, February 21, at Holt Arena and the final events will conclude later that afternoon.
Admission to all track and field events is free and open to the public.
More than 2,000 athletes will come from across the U.S., Canada, Mexico and Australia to participate in the 37th annual Simplot Games. Simplot Games remains the nation’s premier high school indoor track and field event. Sponsored by the J.R. Simplot Company since 1979, the Simplot Games are held at Idaho State University’s Holt Arena in Pocatello, Idaho.
