Garek Bielaczyc from Salt Lake City Breaks Simplot Games Record in the 3200 meters
Casey Clinger from American Fork, Utah, also finishes under previous record
Pocatello, Idaho – Salt Lake City’s Garek Bielaczyc and American Fork’s Casey Clinger dueled in the 3200 meters across the Simplot Games track, and a late kick by Bielaczyc led to a Simplot Games record win for him. Clinger also eclipsed the old record.
Bielaczyc started out front and kept a steady lead for the first few laps, but Clinger quickly caught up. Neither is a stranger to long distances and kept up the pace but found themselves five seconds behind the record pace with 400 meters to go. That didn’t stop them from chasing the record, though. Bielaczyc broke away and then did the impossible and won the race with a time of 8:57.03. Following close behind was Clinger with a time of 8:59.02. Both broke the Simplot Games record in an unbelievable race before a deafening crowd.
The inspiration for the boys were each other. Their secret was simply to run fast and push hard.
“I was honored having someone to work with and push me ahead,” Bielaczyc said.
“I love this track.”
“There is a great atmosphere here and I liked having Garek to push me,” Clinger said.
More than 2,100 athletes have come from across the U.S., Canada, and Australia to participate in the 38th annual Simplot Games. Simplot Games remains the nation’s premier high school indoor track and field event. Sponsored by the J.R. Simplot Company since 1979, the Simplot Games are held at Idaho State University’s Holt Arena in Pocatello, Idaho.
