Coach Ty Draney Taking Titles and Making Memories

Pocatello, Idaho – Simplot Games is an event where athletes come to showcase their track and field talent, and behind every great talent there is a great coach, and looking to the 2018 Simplot Games we will be welcoming many athletes and their coaches back into Holt Arena for yet another great year of competition.
Each year Simplot Games likes to draw your attention to a coach who goes above and beyond in their duties of training the stellar athletes that attend Simplot Games, and this year Coach Ty Gregg Draney of Star Valley track club is being recognized.
Draney has coached at Star Valley High School in Afton, Wyoming for 14 years and counting. His coaching ability and leadership led to accolades such as, the 2016-2017 US Track & Field Coach of the Year, 13-time Wyoming Coach of the Year, and 19-time Region Coach of the Year.
“Some of my favorite memories from the years were when our 2010 girls’ team won their first state title, or the 2012 cross country teams won the first titles in our school’s history,” said Draney, who also was named Cross Country Coaches Association Wyoming Boys Cross Country Coach of the Year in 2016 and 2017.

Draney has been bringing the Star Valley track club back to Holt Arena for any years to compete at a high level, even during years where he had a difficult time finding lodging for himself.

“I’ve spent a night or two sleeping in the back of my truck between meet days at Simplot Games,” said Draney.
Last year, Draney’s Star Valley track club’s boys’ 4×800-meter relay team won the event at Simplot Games, qualifying the relay team invitation to compete at the New Balance National Competition in New York City.
“Our community funded that trip on short notice,” Draney said. “The memories we made there will always be cherished.”
After all the years of coaching, Draney can speak at great length about his favorite memories with his athletes. He is looking forward to making more memories with the Star Valley Track Club at the 2018 Simplot Games.

“I like watching the athletes and teams perform well and approach their potential.” Draney said. “I truly enjoy the process of helping them grow and develop as athletes and people.”
