Wyoming Athletes Qualify for 2019 Simplot Games Finals

Pocatello, Idaho –  Despite the challenging travel weather, Wyoming athletes had no problem delivering outstanding performances at todays Simplot Games, qualifying for many events in the first day and a half of competition.
Here is a list of Wyoming athletes to watch for in the finals.

  • Sydney Thorvaldson, from Laramie, ran the 3200 meter a day late due to weather Friday evening in Wyoming. Qualifying with a time of 10:37.95, just five seconds behind the meet record, she is a Wyoming athlete to watch tomorrow in the finals of the 3200 meters Saturday at 3:40 p.m.
  • Favour Wanjoku, a junior from Rock Springs, was the only qualifier from Wyoming in the girls’ triple and long jumps. The girls’ long jump final is at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, and the girls’ triple jump final is at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday.
  • Riley Smith, a sophomore from Cody, qualified with the third fastest time in the girls’ 1600 meters, and will be joined by two other athletes from Wyoming in the finals. The girls’ 1600 meters will be at 1:55 p.m. on Saturday.
  • Afton athletes Asefa Wetzel, a senior, qualified second, and Peter Visser, a sophomore, qualified fourth in the boys’ 1600 meters. They will be joined by three other athletes representing teams from across Wyoming. The boys’ 1600 meters final will be Saturday at 2:05 p.m.
