Event Rules

Footwear: Because of the wood track and large number of athletes, spiked shoes will not be allowed in the preliminary races on Thursday and Friday except for the 60m Hurdles.  In the interest of safety, spiked shoes are permitted to be used in the Boys and Girls 60meter hurdle preliminaries on Friday.  This is the ONLY running event in which spiked shoes may be used in preliminary competition.  Due to track maintenance concerns, all other races will be restricted to spiked shoes on Saturday ONLY.  Spiked shoes are allowed for all races in Saturday’s finals. Only 3/16” needle spikes will be allowed. In the jumping events, spikes of 1/4” are allowed for both preliminaries and finals.

Running Events

Heating and Seeding: The heats have been seeded as meticulously as possible with the information provided at registration. If there is any unevenness in any heat, it is due to the fact that athletes were entered without a time in the ”Best Mark” field.

False Starts: This meet will utilize the ”no false start” rule. Anyone who false starts will be disqualified immediately.

Blocks: No blocks will be used in the preliminary heats on Friday on the oval track for the 200m and 400m. Blocks will be used in these events in the finals on Saturday. Blocks will be used both Friday and Saturday for the 60m Dash and the 60m Hurdles.

Lapped Runners: The heat participant numbers are small enough so that lapped runners will be able to finish the race. All lapped athletes must move out to the second lane and remain there if they wish to finish the race.

Time Calls: In oval races of more than six runner, athletes’ times will be called out as they cross the finish line. Athletes must listen carefully because they will not be repeated and may not be recorded.

Lane Cut Line: Referees will be stationed near the cut line for all races. A cone will be placed inside the track at this point so the line will be easier to spot. Athletes must stay in their lanes until they reach this point (unless otherwise directed at the start) and then may cut to an inside lane only when two strides ahead of competitors.

Race Conclusion: At the conclusion of a race, athletes should stay in their lanes and near the finish area until they have been identified. Athletes must make sure an official has contacted them and they can then leave the area.

Timing: Fully automatic timing will be used for all races whenever possible. If there is a precise tie in times for a place in finals, a runoff will be held before Saturday’s events to determine who gets to run in the finals. Please be alert to this possibility and be prepared to arrive early if necessary.

Results: Results will be posted on the south arena ramp. Athletes are not to ask officials for their time and place. Once they have been told by the head timers to leave the finish area, they must immediately do so.

60 Meter Hurdles: For the girls, the hurdle height is 33″; distance to first hurdle is 13 meters; distance between hurdles is 8.5 meters; number of hurdles is 5. For the boys, the hurdle height is 39″; distance to first hurdle is 15 yards; distance between hurdles is 10 yards; number of hurdles is 5. Top 18 times in Friday preliminary races advance to Saturday. Three heat final on Saturday afternoon. Overall times determine place.

60 Meter Dash: Top 18 times in Friday preliminary races advance to Saturday. Three heat final Saturday afternoon. Overall times determine place.

200 Meter Dash: No blocks for Friday’s preliminary races. Block starts for Saturday’s finals. Top 18 times in Friday preliminary races advance to Saturday. Top 6 times advance to the Saturday afternoon Heat #3. The remaining 7 – 18 times advance to the Saturday morning Heats #1 and #2. Overall times determine place.

400 Meter Dash: No blocks for Friday’s preliminary races. Block starts for Saturday’s finals. Top 18 times in Friday preliminary races advance to Saturday. Top 6 times advance to the Saturday afternoon Heat #3. The remaining 7 – 18 times advance to the Saturday morning Heats #1 and #2. Overall times determine place. There is a two-turn staggered start.

800 Meter Dash: Top 27 times in Friday preliminary races advance to Saturday. Top 9 times advance to the Saturday afternoon Heat #3. The remaining 10-27 times advance to the Saturday morning Heats #1 and #2. Overall times determine place. Waterfall start for preliminary races; box start for finals.

1600 Meter Run: Top 36 times in Thursday preliminary races advance to Saturday. Top 12 times advance to the Saturday afternoon Heat #3. The remaining 13-36 times advance to the Saturday morning Heats #1 and #2. Waterfall starts. Overall times determine place.

3200 Meter Run: Top 14 times in Thursday preliminary races advance to Saturday’s one heat final with a waterfall start.

Relay Teams: Relay teams must wear their official matching uniforms. Simplot Games T-shirts will not be permitted during competition. Relay members may be changed as long as all runners are registered on the same team. Change forms are available at the athlete check-in. Each athlete may not run on more than two relay teams.

4 x 200 Meter Relay: Top 12 times in Friday preliminary races advance to Saturday’s afternoon two heat finals. First leg has two turn staggered start.

4 x 400 Meter Relay: Top 12 times in Friday preliminary races advance to Saturday’s afternoon two heat finals. First leg has two turn staggered start.

Medley Relay: The distances for the medley relay legs are 400m, 200m, 200m, 800m . Top 12 times in Friday preliminary races advance to Saturday’s afternoon two heat finals. First leg has two turn staggered start.

4 x 800 Invitational Relay: This is an invitational relay limited to 18 teams. If there are more than 18 teams entered, the fastest 18 teams will be invited to participate and verification of those times will be required. Teams must have met the following standards between February 2014 and February 2015 to enter:

Boys must have run a 2:06 or faster . . . . . or have a team average of 8:24 or faster.
Girls must have run a 2:30 or faster . . . . . or have a team average of 10:00 or faster.

If teams are lapped during the race, they will be pulled out.

To enter this relay, enter your team at the online registration site along with other event entries, complete the 4 x 800 Meter Invitational Relay Entry Form, and email (Simplot.Games@Simplot.com) or fax to Simplot Games, (208) 235-5676, Attn: Greg Burch, Meet Director. The Simplot Games Eligibility Rules Committee reviews the requests and determines which teams are eligible to enter this relay. The Meet Director will notify the coaches of the eligibility determination results.

All-Idaho Relay: The top six non-qualifying Idaho Boys and Girls 4 x 200 Relay teams will compete in Saturday’s finals in the All Idaho Relays. An Idaho team may not qualify for the overall final on Friday, but might qualify as a finalist to compete in the All-Idaho Relay final on Saturday. The top Idaho finisher will be based on overall time in either the 4 x 200 team final for all registered teams or the All-Idaho 4 x 200 final for Idaho teams only.

Coaches 200 Meter Dash: There are usually three heats with a two turn staggered start. This is a laned event and overall time determines place. Medals awarded to top three finishers in the classes of Women under age 40, Women over age 40, Men under age 40, and Men over age 40.

Coaches 1600 Meter Run: There are usually two heats with a waterfall start. Overall time determines place. Medals awarded to top three finishers in the classes of Women under age 40, Women over age 40, Men under age 40, and Men over age 40.

Field Events

Qualifying competitions will be held in the shot put, triple jump, long jump, pole vault and high jump on Friday. In these events, each athlete will be allowed three attempts to reach the qualifying mark. No measurements will be taken on Friday. Once the qualifying mark is made, no further attempts are necessary and the athlete will automatically advance to the preliminaries/finals on Saturday. There will be a 90 minute time limit to make the qualifying mark.

On Saturday’s finals, the shot put, long jump and triple jump will be arranged in flexible flights. All athletes must check in before the start of the events to be assigned their flight. Warmups must be completed prior to the scheduled start of the first flight. Ten athletes will advance to finals, which will begin immediately after the last trials flight (3 more attempts). The athlete’s best mark in the trials will carry into the finals. Athletes must listen carefully for the names of the finalists and report immediately. Measurements will be taken during competition on Saturday, as long as they are beyond the qualifying mark from Friday.

Qualifying marks for each event are shown below. The jump runway surfaces for the preliminaries are made of two layers (1” total) of roll-out runway on concrete. For the finals, the surface is 1 layer (1/2”) of roll-out runway on elevate board runway on turf. Landing pit materials are sand.

Footwear: Spikes of ¼” are allowed for all field events (excluding shot put).

Triple Jump: Boys must jump 41′9″ to qualify for Saturday’s finals; girls must jump 34’6″ to qualify.

Long Jump: Boys must jump 20′9″ to qualify for Saturday’s finals; girls must jump 16’9” to qualify.

High Jump: Boys must jump 5’11” to qualify for Saturday’s finals; girls must jump 5′ to qualify. Increase of increments on Saturday will be 2”.

Pole Vault: Boys must jump 13′ 3” to qualify for Saturday’s finals; girls must jump 9′ 6” to qualify. Increase of increments on Saturday will be 6”.

Shot Put: Boys must throw 46′ to qualify for Saturday’s finals; girls must throw 36′ to qualify. The shot put weight for girls is 8.8 pounds; the shot put weight for boys is 12 pounds.

Weight Throw: Throws less than 28′ for girls and 38′ for boys will not be measured. The weight for girls is 20 pounds; the weight for boys is 25 pounds.
